STANDARD GARAGE DOOR SIZES

Determining a garage door size may not be as simple as individuals might expect. There are a number of factors involved that must be considered first. One item that is a large factor is the age of the garage. There are still garages being built today with smaller doors; however, this is not as common as it once was. It also depends on the number of cars it was meant to accommodate. Smaller garage doors may be found in communities where golf is a way of life to lend access to residents’ golf carts. The number of doors, and in some cases windows, on the garage is yet another consideration. Some garages have separate entrance doors while others only have those meant for cars.

TYPICAL DOOR SIZES

The typical garage door height ranges between 7 and 8 feet tall; however there are taller as well as shorter doors in existence. The width of a garage door is generally between 8 and 9 feet. As mentioned, the size of a garage door greatly depends upon the era the garage was built. Decades ago cars were much smaller therefore garage doors were as well. Today individuals drive luxury vans, extended cab pickup trucks, and SUVs. The garage doors, of course, had to be increased in size to accommodate these newer and larger vehicles.

Another reason for the increase in size of garage doors is it is more common today for families to own multiple vehicles. There is the fact that house sizes are increasing with time as well. In some cases families require additional space to accommodate work space and/or storage. It all greatly depends upon the needs of current owners. Those who own golf carts and/or ATVs have special doors installed in their garages. These generally range from 5 to 6 feet wide and are about 7 feet tall.

HOW MANY GARAGE DOORS DO YOU HAVE?

Whether the garage has a single door or a double door greatly affects the size of the garage door as well. In the case of a single door, the standard sized garage door ranges from 8 to 10 feet wide by 7 to 8 feet tall. Double garage doors, as probably imagined, are an entirely different story. This type can range anywhere from 12 to 18 feet wide by 7 to 8 feet tall. Any style garage door can be found in various widths and heights. For example, there are garage doors available on the market today that are 14 feet wide, but only 6 to 6 ¾ feet tall.

The size, again, basically depends upon what owners require and desire; though, zoning is a factor to consider. For example, 18 feet wide garage doors are not appropriate for areas with extremely high winds. These garage doors must be in compliance with building codes in that area. There is the option to simply measure the door; however, the best action for owners to take, especially when in doubt, is to contact a professional garage door installation service.
