INSULATED GARAGE DOOR

One of the single most effective ways to improve the energy efficiency of any home is to insulate the garage door. This will measurably reduce energy costs and offers one of the best ROIs available. Insulation decrease the outside noise pollution of garages and homes. This investment drives up the resale value the property and increases the garage door’s ability to withstand impacts.

INSULATION OPTIONS

Insulating the garage door is considered a do it yourself project for those with experience and is only about $200 for a standard size door. There are a number of insulations types and all of them will reduce energy bills to some degree; however, its efficiency depends upon the type as well as the material of the garage door. A professional garage technician can clear up some of the confusion and advise you of which is best suited to your home as well as which one will be the most economical.

Foam board insulation is designed with rigid panels and is usually made out of polystyrene. It is available in ½ and 1 inch thicknesses rating R-3.3 and R-6.5 respectively. This type of insulation is commonly faced vinyl or aluminum.

Reflective insulation is effective for any type of weather; however, it is most often recommended for climates which are hot. It is available in rolls and the outsides, or a single side, is covered in reflective aluminum foil. This is to reflect the radiant heat.

Batt insulation is flexible and is most commonly what is stuffed inside exterior walls. The back of it is generally made of either foil or paper, while the insulation itself is fiberglass. This serves as a barrier for air and vapor. Its values are around R-3 up to R-4.

DETERMINING FACTORS

Flat garage doors are best fitted with either reflective or foam board insulation due to their lack of panels. The insulation may be affixed to the garage door with tape or glue.

Steel garage doors are generally well suited for most all types of insulation. The cut to fit type foam board can be squeezed inside the garage door frames. Flexible insulation can be stuffed inside the frames around the garage door panels. The fiberglass side should be making contact with the door.

Frame and panel garage doors made of wood may be fitted with rigid insulation. The pieces should be cut and fitted inside the recesses amid the door frames. Installing two layers of foam board insulation for additional climate control.

Purchasing insulation to cut and fit the garage door is relatively simple; however, it can be a bit time consuming. Many do it yourself home owners opt for insulation kits. These kits usually contain everything required to effectively insulate the garage door.
